Halloween Fire Towers

Overview

After a few years of not constructing much Halloween props, I decided to go big this year. Taking inspiration from a Six Flags prop, I chose to build two cemetery towers, but with a twist. Upon remote activation, large fire balls are able to be launched out of the tops of the towers. Built out of 2×4’s and plywood, these are very simple structures. Inside, propane tanks rest on the ground, which are then plumbed into small air tanks. The reason for this is that a propane tank cannot output a large enough volume of gas quickly enough to produce a large flame. Once accumulated in the holding tank, a straight pipe would travel out the top of the tower, passing by a blow torch. Using a solenoid valve and remote activator, when the solenoid is opened, propane rapidly exits the tower, being ignited by the blow torch, producing a fantastic flame. These towers sure drew a crowd on Halloween night, as they shot over 10 foot fire balls into the sky and lit up the entire street to the absolute amazement of by-standers!
